Quality of Life

On November 6, 2012, El Paso voters approved $470 million worth of improvements to parks, libraries, museums, downtown and the El Paso Zoo. On the ballot was Question 1: The issuance of $245,000 general obligation bonds for park, recreation, open space and zoo improvement … ” which received an overwhelming 75% response in favor of approving the Quality of Life Bond Issue. The El Paso Zoo was approved for $50 million to complete the Master Plan that is the framework for moving the Zoo forward in an exciting direction.

 

Chihuahuan Desert

The Chihuahuan Desert exhibit will showcase North America's most diverse desert which encompasses the El Paso region and northern Mexico. The exhibit will tell the story of the Chihuahuan Desert, giving guests an opportunity to experience the magnificent animals that surround them every day such as peccaries, wild turkeys, jack rabbits, and thick-billed parrots. The exhibit will also feature an interactive ropes course! 

 

Asia Gateway and Carousel

Exciting changes are coming to Asia, including a re-designed entrance with themed landscaping and lighting that will provide a delightful view of the Zoo’s brand new 36-foot carousel and shade structure. The carousel will feature a wide variety of endangered species as well as a bird's nest spinning tub and a wheelchair-accessible swan chariot. 

 

 

 

Red River Hog

 The red river hogs will soon be moving to their permanent home! Located in Africa, their new habitat will feature additional water areas (red river hogs are great swimmers!), flat rocks for sunbathing, and immersive viewing experiences for Zoo visitors.

 

 

Wildlife Theater - NOW OPEN! 

 

The El Paso Zoo is even more wild with the opening of the highly-anticipated Wildlife Amphitheater in December 2016! Funded by the 2012 Quality of Life bond funds, the state-of-the-art Wildlife Amphitheater will be a place for Zoo guests to engage and learn in a whole new way through animal encounters, educational programs, concerts, and much more!
