Every day at noon our keepers open the doors between the main orangutan exhibit area and their night house so that our male and female orangutans can come inside and their keepers can put out special enrichment items. These items including treats like fruits and vegetables placed inside puzzle feeders like large plastic balls and cardboard boxes. Each device is designed to help promote natural foraging activities. Around 12:30 the orangutans are released back into the exhibit where they can enjoy all the items left out for them. On weekends education specialists are on hand to tell the story of our orangutans and provide information on how people can get involved in helping to protect rainforest habitats. Enrichment programs at our Zoo are important daily activities for improving and enhancing animal environments while helping to increase behavioral choices for our animals.
