The El Paso Zoo is one of the few zoos in the country that offers daily Galapagos tortoise training sessions. Every day at 10:45am a keeper will enter the exhibit and demonstrate how our male tortoises, Potato Head and Elvis, have been trained to open their mouths and move towards a target. The target device is typically a long stick with a small ball attached at the end that is used as pointer during the training session. Like all training sessions having animals trained to make special behaviors on command helps keepers check on each animal's health. Tasty treats like pieces of fruit and vegetables are given as rewards and the behaviors stimulate the animals thought processes important to their physiological and mental well-being. We recommend that you wait in the shade of the Reptile House while you wait for the program to begin.
