Curriculum based and TEKS focused animal encounters at the Zoo or at your school are available by request.  They include programs designed for a wide variety of groups including classes on field trips, scout groups and religious groups.  We recommend that you make your request far in advance, although the Zoo will arrange for these programs on short notice when scheduling permits and resources are available. 


Animal Encounters at Your School
Animal encounters are fun interactive learning experiences with opportunities to interact with our education animals and animal biofacts. There may be up to 40 students per sessionCost per 30-60 minute animal encounter - $110. Cost for second and or third additional programs scheduled on the same day and at the same location are - $70 per class.  The maximum time we can spend at your school is 3 hours.

 

Classes at the Zoo: Our Zoo classroom is unlike any other in El Paso.
(Available year round except during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Holidays)

 

Zoo Education Specialists and Volunteers present TEKS-focused, curriculum-based animal encounters in the Cisneros Paraje and the new El Paso Water Utilities Discovery Center Classroom.  All classes are fun, interactive learning experiences with opportunities for encounters with our education animals and animal biofacts.

 

When coming to the Zoo there may be up to 30 students per session at $3 per student. The minimum class size is 20.  Smaller class sizes can be accommodated at any size for $60.  Zoo admission fees are extra at $5 per student.  See Education Group Reservations form for details.

Have you ever wondered why some animals survive and others become extinct?  Would you like to be able to explain how animals adapt to their environments?  Do you know why birds migrate to the city of El Paso?  Would you like to have your students learn about the world of animals?  Come and join us for one or more of our special workshops including group discussions, zoo tours, live animals, hands on activities and illustrated presentations.  The El Paso Zoo has it all in a special package designed to provide you with more strategies and ideas for teaching your students.  The Zoo recognizes the importance of meaningful and effective teaching and we have created these workshops to meet both national and state standards.

 

The following workshops are available on request.  The minimum number group size is 10, the maximum group size is 30.  To arrange for a workshop at the Zoo or your school contact the Education Curator at 915-521-1881 or 915-217-4233 or send an email to lobellorl@elpasotexas.gov.

 

Chihuahuan Desert, K-High School.  Are you aware of the different animals living in our Chihuahuan Desert?  Do you know how these animals have adapted to their environment?  Learn why some are nocturnal or crepuscular and which

 species are endangered. This workshop will be a fun, hands-on experience that will introduce you to the animals that live in the Chihuahuan Desert in El Paso and the surrounding region.  The session will include live animals, biofacts, and activities that address science content including teaching principles, comparative adaptations, habitats, coexistence and human impact.  
Registration - $25 per person

 

Birds, K-5th Grade.  Explore the world of El Paso’s nesting and migratory birds and their conservation with this fun, hands-on workshop.  Some species migrate to or stop in El Paso during the winter, others stop only to nest.  El Paso also has bird species living here year round.  Did you know approximately 94 bird species nest in the greater El Paso area?  Enroll in this wonderful workshop and get ready to learn.
Registration - $25 per person

 

Zoo Conservation, 4-8th grade.  This workshop provides an overview of animal taxonomy with an emphasis on biological diversity, human impacts on diversity, and conservation projects underway at the Zoo.  Did you know that our closest relatives, the great apes, could be extinct in 20 years? Are you aware of the different animals that live at the Zoo and how many are endangered species?   What is our El Paso Zoo doing to help with the conservation of endangered species? Join us and learn to identify key habitats and threats to their survival such as deforestation. Team up with your El Paso Zoo to help others understand their responsibility to care for the Earth, to leave healthy ecosystems for future generations.

Registration - $25 per person

Adaptations, Pre-K-3rd Grade. An interactive, hands-on activity, introducing students to the world of animals.  Focus on vocabulary and motor skills. Have you ever wondered how animals are able to survive in the wild?

The El Paso Zoo invites you to explore the skills animals use to live in a wide variety of habitats including physical adaptations like the shape of a bird’s beak and behavioral adaptations such as being nocturnal.  This exciting workshop will provide you with the tools you need to help students understand the wide variety of adaptations found in the animal kingdom. After the workshop, you will be able to explain why animals are important and provide examples from animals here at the Zoo.

The Zoo can present a maximum of two presentations per month to any group from 5th grade and up.  Topics may include, but are not limited to, naturally wild happenings at the Zoo, the latest news in species conservation, and a day in the life of a zookeeper.   Cost: Free upon availability.   Please call 915-521-1850 at least 3 weeks in advance.
