The Ostrich is the world's largest bird.

OstrichAn ostrich can stand nine feet tall and weigh up to 345 pounds! Not only are they the world's largest birds, but they also can run very fast at speeds of up to 43 mph.

With their running ability, not being able to fly away from predators is not a major problem for the ostrich. In addition to their quickness they can deliver a powerful kick capable of killing a lion with a single blow.

Humans have raised ostriches for food and feathers for thousands of years, back to the times of ancient Egypt. Amazingly their history on earth goes back to the era of the dinosaurs where fossils from that period are very similar to ostriches living today.
